My 1 month old pet rat daisy that i've had for 4 days is making a weird noise I'm worried is this normal?

I also have another one month old pet rat named Abby in the same cage with her. I got them at the same time at Petco. Abby is really outgoing and wanting to be played with, but daisy just stays in a corner in the cage. I think she's just really shy . but then she stated to make the weird noises. Is there something wrong with her

Rats are suppose to interact with you and their cage mates. If she has taken herself off into the corner then she is not feeling well, whether it be physically, mentally, or emotionally.

I'm afraid it could be Myco. This respiratory disease is common in the poor-quality rats that we buy from pet stores. I've bought many rats from pet stores and at some time in their lives they have gotten Myco. It's just a fact I live with having fallen in love with these little furballs :)

"............the third time they get Myco it's incurable". This is not possible. Since all pet rats are born with the Mycoplasmosis pathogen in their systems, they carry the bug without symptoms until such time that they are stressed and their immune system crashes. At the pet store the rats are always in a situation where they are stressed so it is not uncommon to buy rats that are already sick from their stay at the pet store.

Mycoplasmosis cannot be cured, period. It can only be controlled, with antibiotics. Each time the rat shows symptoms we call it a Myco flare-up. Unfortunately, once a rat gets it's first myco flare-up, it will continue to get flare-ups off and on throughout it's life. We know at some point that our rats will get sick with Myco and the best we can hope for is that they get it much later in life.

Myco starts out in the nasel passages with excessive sneezing. Left untreated congestion builds up. At this point they start to make the noises. People describe these noises as clicking, guinea pig oinking, or a coffee pot perculating.

Continued untreated it will work it's way down to the lungs and set up the secondary infection of pneumonia. Myco is a lot easier to treat then pneumonia.

RMCA Drug Chart. Print this out and take it with you when you visit the vet. These are drugs most commonly used to treat rats for Mycoplasmosis.

If on the other hand, she is just shy and scared, here are some bonding exercises that have worked for many rat-keepers.

The best way I have found to get my rats use to me is to carry them around with me in the pocket of a hoodie.

But the noises she is making makes me think otherwise.

"my life has gone to the rats"
Reply:you have to be more specific. what does the sound sound like?
Reply:Okay, first of all- just becuase you got it from petco doesn't mean the rat is going to be friendly OR healthy. Your little rat is probably sick, I'm going to say It might have a respratory infection, only becuase I've gotten rats from many diff stores and found that it's very common for rats to come with this. This funny noise is what gives it away for me. Alot of rats will die from this if gone untreated. Honestly, I say you should bring it back to the store if you just got it. Even if you don't want to KEEP IT AWAY FROM THE OTHER RAT!!! the last thing you want is the other one becomming sick too, if what ever your other rat has IS contagious, keep them coranteened. If you ever get a new rat, always keep the new one seporated form the other(s) for atleast a week. This will keep it from getting other rats sick.

Please feel free to contact me for more info.

~Good Luck!~

p.s.

if the rat does turn out to not be sick, just be sure to give it as much time as it needs to warm up to you. You want the rat to trust you from the START. You can try holding your hand in the cage for a long time, but never corner the rat! wait for it to aproch you, always.
Reply:She probably has a respertory problem. they are very common in rats, so a vet can treat her. however, once they have had this infection a third time, it is uncurable
Reply:i have a hamster named Daisy lol

ummmm u should prob take them both 2 the vet 2 c whats wrong
Reply:she also is stressed out about coming into a new home which is causing her symptoms to act up
Reply:What does the noise sound like? She could just be bruxing(when they grind their teeth back and forth, they usually do this because they are happy or stressed)
