It's been so long since I read this and I think I can only half help but I think it's because they both don't fit in anywhere and as he thinks he's accepted by the rich and becomes an *** he loses her? dang it's been too long. please check the cliff notes or online. peace!

Reply:They are both rich, and shallow, and they have been married to each other for years.

The relationship changes a little later, when Tom realizes that Daisy is in love with Gatsby. But he convinces here to break it off, and shortly after that, Tom manuevers his mistriss' husband into killing Gatsby.
