In the great gatsby how does daisy or jays past contribute to the story?

jay's past is basically what the whole things about. he went through all this pain and effort to become rich just so he could have a woman who's cruel and doesn't love him half as much as he loves her. it is up to the audience to decide whether he was really 'great' because he had a shady past but he did spend the rest of his life trying to get daisy.

In the great gatsby how does daisy or jays past contribute to the story?
Well, I'll tell you something. In all honesty,

I have never ventured to read anything

by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

But, that being said, I am sure that if you

wrote a letter to him, he'd be very happy

to send you an autographed letter of reply,

if he only could!

He might even say, "Thank you, for those

extra couple of points. Although I cannot

use them in any novel fashion, every little

bit does help. And it is most certainly true

that it's the thought that counts. Or, at least,

that is what I have heard many a fine young

lady say."
