What is the origin of the phrase "ups-a-daisy"?
Apparently, the phrase "whoops-a-daisy" came from a comic strip from 1925, and it meant "surprise or dismay, specifically upon discovering one's own error".
The phrases "oops-a-daisy" and "ups-a-daisy" come straight from "whoops-a-daisy", and according to phrases.org, "ups-a-daisy" was said "when a child, in play, is assisted in a spring-leap from the ground". Now, ups-a-daisy just means "Get up!" in an encouraging manner.
